About the Expo Centre
As part of its ambitious sustainable building policies, the City of Edmonton has set a goal for all its existing buildings to be carbon neutral by 2050. As one of the City’s largest and most energy intensive facilities, the Edmonton EXPO Centre, at 522,000 square feet, underwent a multi-phase retrofit to improve its energy performance and support the City’s emissions neutral goals.
To maximize value while upgrading the facility, the City adopted the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method – ensuring cost efficiency, accelerated timelines, and optimized performance. The team was responsible for maintaining big room culture onsite, and supporting scenario planning to move beyond traditional “like-for-like” replacements, and rather considered how their design and implementation would strive towards the City’s carbon neutral goal. The EXPO Centre also incorporates a 5 MW rooftop solar array, the largest in Canada.
This session will discuss the Lean IPD process and how it was able to achieve great success for this retrofit while the facility was still operating as an exhibition facility.
