Summary
The “Double Stud Net Zero” assembly provides an easy-to-build net-zero solution using common materials for a well-insulated wall.
Videos showing key highlights of the wall at the exterior & interior
Advantages:
- Easy to build, as it was essentially just building a second wall compared to the “Business as Usual” tier 1 assembly
- Materials used were easily accessible at a hardware or building supply store (aside from the Siga membrane and tape).
- WRB used was more affordable compared to the Tier 3 assembly.
- Building two walls with space between them significantly reduces the number of thermal bridges compared to the “Business as Usual” tier 1 assembly.
- Only 23% more to construct this assembly compared to the “Business as Usual Assembly”
Disadvantages:
- Airtightness detailing was similar to the “Business as Usual Assembly” and was more challenging compared to the Tier 3 assembly.
- Lifting and moving the connected framed walls was more difficult due to the weight of the increased framing.
- Custom interior jamb finishing, or a custom-ordered jamb extension from the window manufacturer, was required.

Click here to see the energy modelling results for this assembly. Compared to a typical existing home in Alberta, this assembly’s energy consumption is reduced by 22.26%. Read our blog on the energy modelling of the ENBIX wall library here to understand a bit more of the story.
This net-zero assembly was chosen as the most affordable and easiest to construct from the LEEP NZE Wall Guides. The double stud wall guide from LEEP can be found here.
The assemblies are also modelled in 3D by Beyond Code and are best viewed from a computer. Click on the links for the 3D models below.
