Alberta Context:

Brought to you by Alberta Ecotrust’s Emissions-Neutral Buildings Information Exchange (ENBIX) in support of the Alberta Ecotrust Retrofit Accelerator program. The Deep Retrofit Discovery Sessions are a series of free public educational information sessions to help address deep energy retrofits of large, part 3 buildings in Alberta. Six of these sessions will be delivered in person in Calgary (3) and Edmonton (3) to provide interaction and networking for participants, and two (2) sessions will be virtual for attendance from any location.

Summary:

Deep Retrofit Discovery Session 3: A Successful Exhibit of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD)

As part of its ambitious sustainable building policies, the City of Edmonton has set a goal for all its existing buildings to be carbon neutral by 2050. As one of the City’s largest and most energy-intensive facilities, the Edmonton EXPO Centre, at 522,000 square feet, underwent a multi-phase retrofit to improve its energy performance and support the City’s emissions-neutral goals.

To maximize value while upgrading the facility, the City adopted the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) method – ensuring cost efficiency, accelerated timelines, and optimized performance. The team was responsible for maintaining big room culture onsite, and supporting scenario planning to move beyond traditional “like-for-like” replacements, and rather considered how their design and implementation would strive towards the City’s carbon-neutral goal. The EXPO Centre also incorporates a 5 MW rooftop solar array, the largest in Canada.

This session discussed the Lean IPD process and how it succeeded for this retrofit while the facility was still operating as an exhibition facility.
