Training and Skills Development – Interactive Heat Map

Summary:

RFS Energy Consulting & Research Inc. and ASK for a Better World developed a spatial analysis and visualization tool that illustrates the coverage of training and skills development programs in Alberta. This tool displays the educational and training opportunities relevant to deep energy retrofits. Programs were included if they addressed at least one key skill or topic area necessary for deep retrofit work, such as building envelope design, energy auditing, solar PV installation, or embodied carbon analysis.

It covers:

  • Post-secondary courses and certifications
  • Industry-provided short courses and webinars
  • Online and in-person offerings
  • Alberta-based and national programs accessible to Albertans

Note: Only programs active at some point between 2014 and early 2025 are included. Programs launched or ended after March 2025 are not yet captured.

How it works:

Click each category at the top of the page to organize courses and certifications by programme type, location, province or provider. From there, you can click and drag the associated bubbles to find links to the organization’s training page, as well as programme details such as type, province, and location, with brief and detailed descriptions for each.

Limitations and Ongoing Work

These databases do not claim to be exhaustive. They represent a snapshot of publicly accessible information available at the time and may not capture private or recently developed programs. Key limitations include:

  • The databases included only programs active between 2014 and early 2025. Subsequent text does not include programs initiated after the time of writing this document (March 2025).
  • The list is not comprehensive for all commercial deep retrofit training.
  • Observations are based only on open-source information available at the time of review.

This is an ongoing and evolving project. It also supports the Technologies and Skills Memo”, a market analysis by RFS Energy, WSP, SAIT and the Alberta Ecotrust Retrofit Accelerator.  A full report referencing these databases will be published in 2026.
